HOW DO YOU KNOW WHEN IT IS TIME TO UPGRADE YOUR AC?

Have you been wondering whether or not your current air conditioner needs to be upgraded? Bexley Heating & Cooling knows it can be an overwhelming process. As a homeowner, it can be hard to tell if your HVAC system would benefit from being upgraded. It’s true – there are many what-ifs involved when considering an upgrade. So, if you think that your air conditioner is finally nearing its end, but aren’t 100% sure, don’t let those pesky what-ifs dissuade you from at least going over your options and having the choice to make an informed decision.

WHAT IS THE AVERAGE LIFESPAN OF AN AC?

Typically, air conditioning systems will last from an estimated 12 to 17 years. Take note that this is just an average, as every unit’s lifespan will be different based on the model and upkeep it received during its life. However, if your AC is nearing the end of this generalized timeframe, there are still several factors to go over before plunging into getting a new upgrade. Often, repairs are suggested because they are the optimal choice. However, bear in mind that completing repairs on an older unit is not ALWAYS the best choice.

WHAT DO YOUR MONTHLY ENERGY BILLS LOOK LIKE?

The monthly cost of running your HVAC system can use up to 46% of your overall utility bill. So, if your AC USES more than that monthly, it may be time to consider upgrading your old but faithful unit. Even though it is still running, it doesn’t mean that it is running efficiently. You may find yourself dishing out more, in the long run. to keep up with the monthly costs of running an old air conditioner.

WHAT KIND OF REFRIGERANT DOES YOUR COOLING UNIT REQUIRE?

Another thing to keep in mind is that older air conditioning units require R22 refrigerant. R22 is now an outdated and unregulated (not to mention very expensive) refrigerant. Due to progression, and current environmental regulations, it does not meet today’s regulations. So, refilling your old air conditioner with a compatible refrigerant that is still regulation-compliant can be expensive. Furthermore, all current air conditioner models are moving away from utilizing this type of refrigerant. For this reason, it may be in your best interests to consider a newer energy-efficient AC. Additionally, when you use an energy-efficient system in your home, you will find that your home’s IAQ (indoor air quality) will be increased as new models emit fewer carbon emissions.

WHAT ARE SOME INDICATORS YOUR SYSTEM IS DUE FOR AN AC UPGRADE?

  1. Irregular Cooling: If the temperature in your home remains consistently inconsistent, this is a common indication that the current AC can’t maintain and regulate the temperature in your home adequately. A good air conditioning system should be able to cool your home and evenly regulate that temperature throughout your entire home. So, if your older AC is not performing as such, you may be considering repair options. While repairs are a great option, they are not always the best way to go. Multiple repairs over time will result in a Frankenstein type of air conditioner, whereas a modern energy-efficient system eliminates the need for continual repairs and should lower your overall power bill, which will ultimately even out the upfront costs of a new AC. Although it’s an initial investment, upgrading at the right time can often be a worthy investment and prove beneficial for you and your home as you will recoup some of the costs later on. As a bonus, it will raise the resale value of your house too!
  1. Loud Noises: Does your air conditioner seem a bit loud? This is the norm for older cooling units, but it could also mean your particular air conditioner model or your ductwork is not properly sized for the square footage of your entire home. If this is the case, then your AC likely is stuck overworking itself in attempts to keep up with cooling your home that is too large for its capacity, ultimately resulting in unnecessary noise. Think of it as a verbal signal of its own frustration and protests.
  1. Dust Particles: Perhaps you are experiencing problems with dust in your home. This could prove quite pesky! If there is an unusual amount of dust inside your home – no matter how much you clean – your ductwork may be the source of your woes. Over periods of time, ductwork can, in fact, wear down and form gaps or holes, which result in leaks that will decrease the effectiveness of your AC. When this happens, dust can sometimes be released throughout your home.
  1. Excessive Energy Bills: As mentioned earlier, overly high energy bills are a sign that your system would benefit from an upgraded AC. Just remember: your cooling bill should not accumulate to over 46% of your overall utility bill.
