Ceiling fans– are they helpful in lowering your energy bill? You’ve probably heard a rumor here and there about how ceiling fans assist in cooling a room’s temperature, which can result in reducing your energy bill. While we all appreciate additional energy savings, it’s not realistic to hope for a drastic increase in energy savings through ceiling fan use. However, don’t let that discourage you. There are many positive details that can come from using ceiling fans in your home. So, please join Bexley Heating & Cooling as we discuss how ceiling fans can be appropriately utilized!
Do Ceiling Fans Result in Energy Savings?
Let’s begin with clearing the air. Pun intended! A common myth about ceiling fans is that they help reduce the room’s temperature. However, this is not the case. Ceiling fans can be helpful tools that assist in providing a cool, calming feeling on your skin. But despite this, they do not lower the room’s temperature. A ceiling fan’s purpose is to take the existing air and circulate it around the room.
So, what does this mean exactly? Should you utilize ceiling fans in your home? We’ll let you decide. Many homeowners find the cooling effect on their skin to be relaxing. In fact, some find it easier to sleep at night with a fan blowing air on them. But it’s important to note that unless you are physically in the room to enjoy the air from the fan, if you were to leave the ceiling fan powered on consistently, it won’t benefit your A/C system. Remember, your air conditioner will still be functioning just as much as it normally would to maintain the set temperature within your home.
How Can I Best Utilize a Ceiling Fan?
Used as an additional tool with your AC, ceiling fans can prove to be a benefit. But how do you properly utilize a ceiling fan to get the most use out of it? There are two ways to accomplish this. First, when you power on a ceiling fan, it’s best to raise the temperature on the thermostat by about five degrees. When you do this, your air conditioner will run less frequently which is what actually saves you money on your energy bill. So, when you are physically in the room, the temperature which is now higher won’t negatively affect you because of the fan’s cooling effect.
Second, if you choose to turn on the ceiling fan, it is best to make it a habit of turning the power on and off when you enter and exit the room. This is because if you are not in the room when it is powered on, there is no advantage to leaving the ceiling fan running. You will only waste energy further. Therefore, bear in mind that leaving the fan on to cool down the room, even when no one is around, will do the opposite of your original intention and raise your energy bill.
